Grammy award winnaar Sugar Blue wordt ook wel de Jimi Hendrix of de Charlie Parker van de harmonica genoemd. Namen die qua niveau in hetzelfde rijtje passen als de deze revolutionaire, elektrische bluesharmonica artiest. Hij groeide op met jazz, en luisterde vooral naar Dexter Young en Lester Gordon... Maar hij verloor al snel zijn hart aan Muddy Waters en de grote blueshelden. Hij heeft getoerd en platen opgenomen met the Rolling Stones, Willie Dixon, Bob Dylan, Stan Getz, Ray Charles, Frank Zappa en Prince... De enorme energie van zijn muziek is altijd overweldigend, en maakt een bezoek naar zijn concerten tot onvergetelijke ervaringen! Een vurig hart, dat met de kracht van een orkaan zijn ziel in zijn muziek stopt!
Blue, zijn echte naam is James Whiting (16-12-1949) groeide op in de wijk Harlem, New York.
Zijn moeder was danseres en zangeres en trad op in het bekende Apollo theater. Daar bracht Blue veel tijd door, waar hij bekende mensen tegenkwam zoals Billie Holiday. De sfeer beviel hem zo, dat hij ook een van hen wilde zijn.
Zijn eerst harmonica kreeg hij van zijn tante. Het blazen leerde hij door mee te spelen op de radio, wanneer hij Bob Dylan of Stevie Wonder hoorde. Daarna ging hij een stap verder doordat hij beïnvloed werd door jazzgiganten zoals Dexter Gordon en Lester Young.
Door deze achtergrond ontwikkelde Blue een geheel eigen stijl, die heel herkenbaar is.
Zoals zoveel bluesmuzikanten begon hij op de hoek van de straten te spelen.
In 1975 maakte hij zijn eerst album met Brownie McGhee and Roosevelt Sykes. Een jaar later werd hij gevraag om mee te doen op de zwarte schijven van Victoria Spivey and Johnny Shines. Vervolgens haalde pianist Memphis Slim, die al een paar jaar in Parijs rond reed in een witte Rolls Royce, hem over om naar de lichtstad te komen. Dat heeft hem geen windeieren gelegd. Blue kwam in contact met de Rolling Stones, die voor zijn speciale geluid van harmonica blazen vielen. Het gevolg: Blue deed mee op hun hit Miss You en de albums Some Girls, Emotional Rescue en Tattoo You. Bovendien trad hij in die periode vaak live op met de Stones. Vervolgens legde hij het aanbod van hen naast zich neer om deel uit te maken van de backing band. Liever frontman is zijn mening en hij keerde terug naar Amerika om zijn eigen band samen te stellen. Terug in Chicago, werkte en leerde hij van de grote mannen; Big Walter Horton, Carey Bell, James Cotton en Junior Wells. Daarna ging hij met zijn mentor Willie Dixon op tournee met The Chicago, Blues All Stars en deed daarmee Nederland aan tijdens het North Sea Jazz festival.
In 1983 stelde hij zijn eigen band Blue's star samen. Twee jaar later ontvangt hij een Grammy Award voor zijn album Blues Explosion, live opgenomen tijdens het fameuze Montreux Jazz festival.
Zijn naam is dan gevestigd en hij toert door alle continenten. Trad op met Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Art Blakey and Lionel Hampton. Hij deed mee met Fats Domino, Ray Charles, and Jerry Lee Lewis t.b.v. the Cinemax special, Fats Domino and Friends.

Grammy award-winning Sugar Blue has been called the Jimi Hendrix or the Charlie Parker of the harmonica, both appropriate names for the revolutionary and eclectic blues harpist. He grew up listening to jazz - particularly Lester Young and Dexter Gordon - and soon fell in love with Muddy Waters and the blues greats. He has toured and recorded with the Rolling Stones, Willie Dixon, Bob Dylan, Stan Getz, Ray Charles, Frank Zappa, Prince...to name a few... His music is always astonishing and absolutely energetic!! A heart on fire, blowin' hot from the soul with the force of a gale!
Grammy Award-winning harmonica virtuoso Sugar Blue is not your typical bluesman.
Born James Whiting (16121949), he was raised in Harlem, New York, where his mother was a singer and dancer at the fabled Apollo Theatre. He spent his childhood among the musicians and shows people who knew his mother, including the great Billie Holiday, and decided that he wanted to be a performer.
Blue received his first harmonica from his aunt, and proceeded to hone his chops by wailing along with Bob Dylan and Stevie Wonder songs on the radio, he was soon to be influenced by the jazz greats such as Dexter Gordon and Lester Young.
Sugar Blue has used this background to his advantage, though, creating an ultra-modern blues style and sound that is instantly recognizable as his own.
Blue began his career as a street musician and made his first recordings in 1975 with legendary blues figures Brownie McGhee and Roosevelt Sykes. The following year, he contributed to recordings by Victoria Spivey and Johnny Shines before pulling up stakes and moving to Paris on the advice of pioneer blues pianist Memphis Slim.
While in France, Blue hooked up with members of the Rolling Stones, who instantly fell in love with his sound. The Stones invited Blue to join them in the studio. Besides his work on their hit Miss You, the Some Girls album, he can be heard on Emotional Rescue and Tattoo You. He appeared live with the group on numerous occasions and was offered the session spot indefinitely, but he turned it down, opting instead to return to the States and put his own band together rather than became a full-time sideman. Before returning to the U.S. in 1982, Blue cut a pair of albums, Crossroads and From Paris to Chicago.
Blue's decision to return home, despite his growing renown as a session player, was spurred by his desire to work with and learn from the masters of blues harmonica. Thus he came to Chicago and proceeded to sit in with the likes of Big Walter Horton, Carey Bell, James Cotton and Junior Wells. Blue went on to spend two years touring with his friend and mentor Willie Dixon as part of the Chicago Blues All Stars before putting his own band together in 1983.
With his own band, Blue's star continued to rise. He received the 1985 Grammy Award for his work on the Atlantic album, Blues Explosion, recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival.
He recorded on Dixon's Grammy-winning Hidden Charms album in 1989. He has appeared across America, Europe and Africa at many prestigious festivals - Zurich, Den Haag, Antibes, Nice, Cannes, Montreal, Chicago, Pistoia, Bern and has performed on festival stages with classic artists like Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Art Blakey and Lionel Hampton. Blue continues to appear in clubs and festivals around the world and has also set his sights on television and the big screen. He sat in with Fats Domino, Ray Charles, and Jerry Lee Lewis for the Cinemax special, Fats Domino and Friends, and has appeared on screen and in the musical score of Alan Parker's acclaimed 1987 thriller Angel Heart, starring Robert De Niro.
Sugar Blue incorporates what he has learned into his visionary and singular style, technically dazzling yet wholly soulful.
He bends, shakes, spills flurries of notes with simultaneous precision and abandon, combining dazzling technique with smoldering expressiveness and gives off enough energy to light up several city square blocks...
And sings too! His distinctive throat tends to be overlooked in the face of his instrumental virtuosity - he's got a rich, sensual voice with a whisper of huskiness which by itself would be something out of the ordinary. But oh, there's that harmonica again...
